From Physical Gold to Digital Certificate Infrastructure

From Physical Gold to Digital Certificate Infrastructure via Blockchain

Gold is an asset everyone recognizes, with a value people understand at a glance. Previously, when gold was deposited at a Lao gold bank, the physical bars sat in a vault, backed by a paper certificate. Verifying that the certificate still matched the actual bars required a process involving multiple parties. Tracing historical records was equally difficult, since data lived scattered across systems that didn’t talk to each other.

This is the exact challenge financial institutions holding large gold reserves run into, and it’s the starting point where blockchain and digital infrastructure step in.

When Gold Connects to Digital Infrastructure

Digital infrastructure is a system that lets data and rights tied to an asset like gold be managed, verified, and connected in a structured way, using blockchain technology to reinforce the parts legacy systems handle poorly. That includes:

• Centralized data management that remains verifiable

• Historical audit trails

• Real-time asset data referencing

• A structure ready to support future use cases

At this stage, the focus is on building a solid data foundation and infrastructure, setting the groundwork for RWA tokenization down the line.

A Real Use Case: LBB Gold Certificate x SIX Protocol

A clear example of this is the partnership between SIX Network and Lao Bullion Bank (LBB), announced previously.

LBB already presents Gold Certificate data and rights digitally. What LBB and SIX Network are working on together is building on that foundation, improving how gold asset data is managed, verified, and connected. SIX Protocol is one of the technologies being applied and evaluated for fit, with priority given to security, data accuracy, system performance, and alignment with LBB’s operational framework.

From here, LBB and SIX Network share an interest in exploring the potential of gold tokenization and Real-World Asset tokenization going forward, a path that will require study across technology, operating models, business feasibility, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Why This Matters for the Broader RWA Market

The RWA market has grown fast over the past year. On-chain data shows total RWA value climbing from $6.3B in February 2025 to $25.3B in February 2026, roughly a 4x increase in a single year. Gold is one of the asset classes drawing significant attention in this space, given how familiar it is and how clearly its value translates.

What often gets overlooked is that before gold can be tokenized, it needs a layer of digital infrastructure that makes the underlying asset data trustworthy and verifiable. Institutions holding large gold reserves, like banks or bullion banks, are the starting point for building that data foundation, ahead of any move toward tokenization.

SIX Network and the Next Step Toward Gold On-Chain

SIX Protocol was built as a blockchain solution specifically for businesses and enterprises. That positions SIX Network’s role in a case like LBB around on-chain asset data management and asset tokenization expertise, built from working across a range of RWA categories.

Developing digital infrastructure for LBB now is about preparing the technology for gold-related use cases that may emerge later, for LBB in upgrading its gold infrastructure, and for SIX Network in applying its expertise to a real-world gold use case.

The initial goal is building infrastructure that’s efficient, secure, and fit for real-world use, ahead of considering the next step: gold tokenization.
